I Am Offended

In an old episode of T.V.’s “Seinfeld”, Jerry’s friend George cleverly attempts to establish his own charity. Since he doesn’t really support any cause except himself he creates a vague shell organization called “The Human Fund”. As he promotes the “cause” he finds that people are generally pretty happy to be associated with this nice sounding foundation.
George’s charity did not offend anyone, unlike the name of Jesus in today’s pluralistic, politically correct, easily offended culture. Yesterday I shared that one of the reasons I believe so many people get so upset at the name of Jesus is because of the exclusive claim that Jesus made when asked by one of his disciples about the way to heaven.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6
I know that another reason people are uncomfortable with Jesus; it is because of what he did for them on the cross.
In 1st Corinthians 1:18 we read “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
What is the folly, the foolishness, the offensiveness of the cross?
We will look at that on Friday.
