Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32
The church in Pergamum that Jesus warns about knowing the truth has been infiltrated by two groups of believers who are advocating false teaching. One that teaches a laxity of moral behavior, the other of promoting rigid legalism. How do you clear up the confusion when you’re not sure about the truth, when you’re confused about which direction to go?
Jesus comes to this church that’s struggling with being confused and he tells them that the truth is found in God’s word. Without a standard like that everyone is confused.
Imagine a baseball game with no rules. Could you imagine the confusion of not knowing how many innings or outs or balls and strikes each player gets? Can you imagine running from home plate directly to 3rd base first because you wanted a triple?
How would you determine who’s doing well in the game? Poll the players. Poll the stands? What would be the standard? What are the rules you play the game of life with. That’s where God’s word comes into play. Even though society may change its mores the Bible says in Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever."
