But God
raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was
impossible for death to keep its hold on him. Acts 2:24
It has
been years since I watched the film version of “The Chronicles of Narnia” based
upon the books by C.S. Lewis. In this first installment, “The Lion, the Witch,
and the Wardrobe,’ the great heroic lion Aslan is shorn and slain on a
sacrificial stone by the forces of evil. The Pevensie children; Peter, Susan,
Edmund and Lucy are distraught when this occurs, and all of their hopes are
dashed to pieces. It appears as though the wicked White Queen is going to
overcome the whole land of Narnia and keep it in winter forever without
Christmas.
It is
then that the miraculous happens, when a new dawn breaks and Aslan is brought
back to life to defeat the army of the evil witch. Aslan’s heroic and selfless sacrifice,
taking the place of the rebellious Edmund overcomes death itself. It’s a
remarkable moment of absolute wonder and delight when my own children and now
grandchildren see or hear if I’m reading it, this part of the story for the
very first time.
In the
second chapter of Acts when Peter preaches to the gathered crowd on the streets
of Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, he tells them that Christ, who was
crucified by the very same people, had risen from the agony of death by God,
and that death itself could not hold on to Christ. Jesus was made alive again
through the infinite power of God. It was an amazing moment in the history of
all creation and one which has captivated the hearts, minds, and souls of
billions of people on earth for almost two thousand years.
We are all confronted by
the face of evil and go through times when there appears to be no hope. However, with our faith in Jesus, we can
experience the same power to overcome whatever forces may be facing us. Because
of Christ’s resurrection, a new dawn began giving those who love and follow Him
a never-ending Kingdom of our Creator God. It is a delightful mystery to ponder
and, at the same time, a magnificent gift to gratefully await.
